June 04 Tech Talk: The Rectification of Reality - the Era of Smart CamerasAs technology advances, it seems almost ludicrously funny when cameras spill out the 'latest-tech' that comprises of everything-and-anything, read my lips, anything can be touched-up. Think about this, there's portrait enhancer modes within the F-series (F50fd and F100fd only), which basically states in simple words, 'reduces blemishes' and makes you look presentable...without touching up the photos physically...In fact, its a great alternative if you can barely afford the highly priced adobe CS3, or the to-be-released CS4 which we know nothing of...of course. No need for botox or anti-aging cream...all you need is a snap-happy festive mood, and you're set to go for candid shot hunting. (taken with the F100fd - Portrait Enhancer) Still even though reality can't lie, the camera can tweak what reality can't. Make you look; better, by just that little bit...whether its more of an ego-booster or just a point where it brings you your average stalker... We noted that there's even cameras that have what we call a 'Happy Face Retouch' mode within the chassis of Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-W150 camera which seems necessary...only if you're a new age emo kid who only scrowls at the words 'cheese' and 'smile'. Happiness doesn't come in folds, but if a camera can do it on your behalf, why the heck not? In fact, all it really does, is physically alter your features, by simply twisting the ends of your face upwards in a sweet, blurring motion. Not a bad piece of technology to own... (totally unglam...after gym -_-, but you get my drift) In fact, in comes upgrades that renew themselves at an amazing speed, that has seen a few incarnations of Face Detection, that now at its 3rd stage, not only detects 10 pax, it also helps identify people who are camera shy and not willing to go full-frontier for the camera. From the likes of Kodak, Nikon, Pentax; you wouldn't have expected less then automatic gun-speed shutter shots, where the days of having to manually toggle through settings for ISO clarity...is but a secondary thought. From blink, smile and face detection; we've got image stabilizing that allows even a highly unstable individual shoot a decent picture. In fact, sharpness of focus, when snapping up close with a blurred out background can come across as artsy. Did we mention the smile-shutter, where the camera snaps when it detects that much sighting of toothy goodness? Maybe bending truths aren't half as bad as putting up a picture of your favourite celebrity and trying to pass it for your very own. Note that the cameras can't lie, but humans can. |
