How to Cool Yourself, the Primitive Way

As the weather heats up to a fever pitch, there are some ways to keep the heat off and stay cool as a cucumber would be. We have segregated the ones that we have employed and are currently utilizing at this very instant to keep cool in a non-air con situation.

    1. Just add water. The relief is almost immediate, and will last for up to one hour or more.
      • Ball up and soak a t-shirt in the sink, wring it out, put it on and sit in a lawn chair (or other chair that lets air through to you) in front of a fan. Re-wet as it dries. Make sure not to soak it with cold water. It can be colder than you think. Instead use lukewarm water so you get cool without freezing. Using a synthetic shirt will ensure no "wet T-shirt" look.

      • *Wear a short sleeved shirt and put water on the sleeves. If there is a breeze or fan blowing on you, you can actually get cold. Use a squirt bottle, the sink or hose if outside to keep your sleeves wet. If you are outside and wearing long pants and you put water on your legs, the water will cool your legs.
      • Hold a cold beverage on your neck to cool yourself. A cold object, such as a soda can, held against the neck cools the blood to the brain very quickly.
    • Or, Soak your feet in a bucket of cold water. You can do it almost anywhere and don't have to stay in the tub. The body radiates heat from the hands, feet, face and ears, so cooling any of these will efficiently cool the body.
    1. Dress (or undress) for the heat. There are several strategies to dress, depending on your situation:
      • Summer Clothing: Wear natural fabrics (cotton, silk, linen) rather than polyester, rayon, or other artificial fibers (with the possible exception of performance fabrics).
    • Wear Light Colors: Darker colors will absorb the sun's rays and be warmer than light or white clothing, which reflects light and heat. Wear natural summer clothing.

Cover Up: Covering up may actually keep your cooler, especially if the heat is low in humidity. In the scorching temperatures of the Middle Eastern deserts, traditional cultures wear clothing covering from head to toe. By protecting your skin from the sun beating down, you'll also shade your skin. Be sure your clothing is natural fabrics, and loose.

      Other Non Conventional Means:
    1. Use a hint of mint.Try a few minty or menthol products to cool your skin: slather on lotion with peppermint (avoid your face and eyes), shower with peppermint soap, use a minty foot soak, and powders with mint. Mint refreshes the skin and leaves a nice cooling sensation.
    2. Try a heat snorkeling system. Take a glass and fill it almost to the brim with ice cubes. Then hold it up to your mouth and blow gently into the cup. The ice causes the air you are blowing into the cup to cool down drastically, and since the air only has one way out of the cup (the hole which should now be aiming right at your face) the cold air is forced out over your skin. This is a great alternative to air conditioning and is very simple. Note that this is not any more efficient that A/C, as energy goes into freezing the ice.
    3. Breathe like a dog. Try the [[Breathe Like a dog} Roll your tongue into a tube with the tip outside the mouth. Continuing slow deep breath, breath in through the tube and then move your chin to your chest as you breath out through your nose. Do that 5-10 times and you should start to feel cooler. Dogs often use their tongues to cool themselves; perhaps this yoga practice comes from noticing that.
    4. Eat spicy food. It's not a coincidence that many people in hotter regions of the world eat spicy food. Spicy (hot to the taste) food increases perspiration which cools the body as it evaporates. It also can cause an endorphin rush that is quite pleasant and might make you forget about the heat.
    5. Use alcohol--rubbing, that is... Take ordinary rubbing alcohol and a wash-cloth and pour some alcohol onto the cloth and rub it onto your face, being careful not to get any in your mouth or eyes, and stand in front of or under moving air and the evaporating alcohol makes it feel around 30 degrees.
    6. Put a freeze on things. Get a 1 or more 3 liter bottles, fill them mostly full of water, freeze them, then place them in a large bowl (to catch dripping water). Position a fan to blow on them. As the ice in the bottles melts, the air cools around them. The fan will blow that air at you. The water in the bottles can be frozen overnight and used again, repeatedly. This will supplement your AC if you have it, and will serve as a ad hoc AC until you can get a decent AC system. Note that this is not any more efficient that A/C, as energy goes into freezing the ice.
    7. Think cool. Read books about climbing Mount Everest, visiting Norway, or watch "March of the Penguins", "Ice Age", or "The Day After Tomorrow". You might not be physically cooler, but if your mind envisions a cold environment, you might feel a bit cooler.
    8. Find a shaded area and set up water misting system that connects to an ordinary garden hose that can be found at home improvement stores. Then, just sit there and let the mist cool you off.
    9. Sit Still. Do not try to fan yourself because it can make you hotter. Trying to move while feeling hot can make you feel hotter.
    10. Cool as a cucumber! Slice a thin piece of cold cucumber (from the fridge or a cooler) and stick it in the middle of your forehead! This feels fantastic on a hot day or when stuck in a hot car, and works almost immediately!

The Journey Commences – Part I

…And the weary stands defeated, overlooking the momentous destruction of peace…

He has been evolving, since the long job started, and as much as I know that the feeling of being settled perhaps is something that might seem a tad boring to him, and yet. He has told me before to remind him when he starts work I would need to reel him back to earth, and yet this time around, his level of satisfaction be it in terms of work or the need to mother-coddle me (which really does not need to exist) and my somewhat dependence on him, seem to all revolve in an ugly circle of mundaneity.

His constant jibbing of his current workplace which he has since forsaken to take up in arms at another firm, which can be akin to my complaints of work prior to this. His need for space which I do acknowledge and try to stay out of the way by heading out with friends. His needs in life which I try to cater, be it to not be disagreeable and sweet as a diabetic sugared rabbit.

It is all a matter of transition, whether it be that I am often coined as illogical which he sweetly coats with words honed at highlighting my talents in most trades (and my failures in them as well – one minute enthusiasm they say) just because I happen to drift off half way through conversations into a deeper form of thought, whilst he ignores much of whatever I say. ‘Let’s sit down and talk’ he says, only to want to come to the point quickly and not to listen to whatsoever I really have to say.

‘Feelings’ it seems are over rated in this district especially when it comes with the term, ‘making a mountain out of a molehill’. And that I stopped, coining my words with a heightened sense of diplomacy. ‘Yes my love’, ‘alright my dear’, and though it has only been a short period of time, he has passed the verdict; one of dredgery and contempt.  One of self-righteousness, honed from a well-adjusted lifestyle. Even through valiant efforts, he sees me rather intellectually incapable to follow up to speed with his brainy all-encompassing ways due to his love for books and high-end zest for life.

Money he says is the root to all his problems. Contradictory to mine, where I had thought that coming here was to start a life anew with him, he sees it as if I am a tad bit too clingy. ‘Live life for yourself’ he said, ‘not just laze around and do things that I can do within a day’.

Coming from my part, all I see right now is one of a life less travelled. One of discovery and companionship. A life in pursue of chasing certain dreams. And yet, what is a dream. When the party has waned and the moon hangs high in its stead, where does it all end? Happy or sad; vibrant or fading?

A ‘no sir, yes ma’am’ scenario, and we have got perhaps the perfect script of yet a lengthy and arduous journey of cyclical values. ‘We need some time apart’ he said. And so ends what I think or feel, or desire; and revolution prevails.”

    Audio-Technica QuietPoint ANC7b – T3’s First Sighting

T3 Singapore’s Most Wanted – September!: Our first sighting of the rather magnificent looking Audio-Tech headset… that’s more than just a little quiet… Award-winning QuietPoint active noise-cancelling technology has seen this second rendition of its iconic Audio-Technica headset take to the street in style.

    DSCF2015

Not only are these portable headgear, easily stowed away, it also ranks well in the comfort arena.

    DSCF2016

Built for the busy individual who seeks for some of that ‘silent treatment’ within a noisy setting, this all-new ATH-ANC7b QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones not only simulates a vacuum-like surrounding for the best audio sound, it also reduces background noise of up to 85%.

    DSCF2017

For ease of use, the QuietPoint can be folded flat for easy stowaway and include a detachable cable for utilizing its noise-cancelling functionality without any audio playback. Great for in-flight entertainment

    DSCF2019

Looks great on the ladies as well. Do note its rather small footprint when compared with other deluxe models, that weigh heavy on the head due to its humongous sizing.

When zoomed in, although, it seems evident that the one with flash appears much cleaner and with minimal noise. Clean is good!

Make sure he/she is your best friend before getting engaged. The strong bond of friendship will help you both survive tough times.
    BOND
Make it a point to spend time together often but leave room for each other. Also spend time alone w/ each other, so that at the end of the day you could both share your experiences. This way, you stay interesting with your partner.
    COMPLIMENTS
Always compliment each other. This will prevent feelings of resentment & thinking that one is being taken for granted.
    DATE
Keep doings things that you both enjoy, do them together. Make time & continue to date to keep the romance - look good, smell good to maintain physical attraction
    DIFFERENCES
Celebrate differences. Never force your ideologies down each other's throat. Give up trying to turn your partner into you. Accept differences, appreciate them.
    FIGHTS
Fight w/the aim to resolve the issue. Don't outdo each other. The longer you extend the fight. The more chances that you'll say something hurtful that you don't really mean. As mad as you were w/ your partner, he/she is still the person who laughs at your jokes & thinks you're hot. Hear each other out, don't dig up old issues. Choose your battles. Make sure the fight will be worth it & that something will change in the relationship as a result of the fight.
    FLAWS
Know that the perfect person does not exist. Know that just as there are things that you love about him/her, there will be things that will make you go crazy. We are only human with our own flaws.
    FUN
Have fun together! This means keeping the fun & spontaneity that was there in the early days.
Allow yourselves to get silly. Being able to make each other laugh & see the lighter, crazier, absurd side is the best way to get through all the differences in personalities, adjustments in lifestyle & opposing viewpoints.
    GOALS
Make sure you have similar goals. It would be difficult to keep your bond intact if your views are complete opposite.
    GRUDGES
Quit tabulating grudges. Let it off. Discuss it, then trash it, don't recycle it.
    KEEPING IT HOT
Keep it hot by traveling to diff. places together. A new setting will do wonders. Always have skin contact - be it holding hands, a massage or just plain leg rubbing.
    HONESTY
Don't lie or hide things. The problem will only get bigger.
    KNOW EACH OTHER
Learn each other's interest. It really keeps the conversation flowing!
    HUG
A hug can be far better more intimate than a kiss.
    IDENTITY
Don't lose your personality - that's why he/she fell in love w/you. Have separate interest & activities to keep your individual, & to be able to contribute more to the relationship.
    INDEPENDENCE
Having your own income means you're the boss in your life.
    IN-LAWS
    Make rooms for the in-laws.
    INTENTIONS
Wish each other well. Don't wish each other worst
    ISSUES
Speak up about the awkward stuff now, like money & sex. The earlier, the better.
    LISTEN
Listen, listen, listen. Hear each other out especially during arguments.
    LOOK GOOD
Mind your appearance! Stay fit & healthy for each other.
    LOVE
It all boils down to your love, chemistry & respect for each other.
    MEMORIES
Remind each other of the old days. Do something that you used to do for each other before. It may even be corny but it made you two together. Experience new things together- from dining into a new restaurant to experiencing street food together to exploring to new places. It's the little surprises that make great memories.
    MIND READING
No matter how long you've been together, do not think that you can read each other's mind.
    NEEDS
Be good to yourself, then be good to your partner. That's what love is all about. Think about your partner. Will it make him/her happy? Will she/he enjoy it? Consider each other's feelings. Be very attentive & sensitive to each other's needs, physically & emotionally, that way your partner learns to do the same for you. Never take your partner for granted.
    PRIORITIES
If one says it's important, then it is! Prioritize each other among other things!
    SPACE
Give each other space. Have your boy's night out. If you can't trust each other with this, then don't get married.
    SORRY

    Lose Weight: The Health-Pro Way!

What do diet and exercise experts do to jump-start their own fitness programs? We asked six of the most renowned get-fit gurus in America to share their personal shape-up tips.

    Get the Right Balance
“I have one favorite diet food: I boil eggs, take out the yolk and replace it with hummus. It’s got healthy carbs, protein and fat. For meals, I divide my plate into thirds. On one third of the plate, I put some low-fat protein, no bigger or thicker than my palm. I fill the other two-thirds of the plate with colorful, non-starchy vegetables and fruit. Finally, I add a dash of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat like olive oil or guacamole.”
—Barry Sears, author of The Zone

    Wake Up Hungry
“Waking up hungry for breakfast is a good sign you’ve likely lost weight while sleeping! Too many people eat late at night and then wake up with a food hangover. Instead, I make sure to fuel up during the day and diet by night. I eat every four hours: breakfast at 7 a.m., first lunch at 11 a.m., a second lunch at 3 p.m., followed by a light evening meal.”
—Nancy Clark, author of Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook

    Limit Beloved Treats
“I don’t believe in deprivation. But I never keep goodies in the house because, when it comes to candy and cookies, I have a hard time eating just one. Instead, I go out and buy a single serving of my favorite treat once in a while. I love really good chocolate. I’d rather have a small portion of the really good stuff than waste calories on things I’m not crazy about.”
—Juliana Maggio, registered dietitian, The Miami Institute for Age Management & Intervention

    Move Those Buns
“The squat works more muscles and bones than any other single move. Stand in front of a chair with your hands crossed over your chest and feet 16 inches apart. Keep your head up, back straight, and slowly lower your body (breathing in) until your butt touches the chair. Don’t rest, and come back up (breathing out). Try doing 10 at first, working up to three sets of 10 to 15 reps.”
—Brian Killion, fitness trainer and owner of Killion Fitness in Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.

    Listen Up
“It’s been proven that people who listen to music while exercising lose twice as much weight as those who don’t. It keeps you moving and staves off boredom. I’m also a big believer in visualization: Put pictures up everywhere of how you want to look. Have quotes around the house that you can repeat when you feel weak. Then strap on the headphones and get going!”
—Lacey Stone, Equinox trainer and founder of Lacey Stone Fitness in New York City

    Sneak in Some Ab Work
“You can sneak in some really effective ab exercises almost anywhere—and no one even needs to know. Whenever you’re sitting in your car, at your computer, even at the movies or on an airplane, try the following: Draw your navel in toward your spine without rounding your lower back. Open your chest and draw your shoulder blades back and down. Relax your neck and sit up as straight as you can. This will make you look taller and take loads of pressure off your spine.”
—Sharon Carlstrom, fitness director at the Atlantic Club in Red Bank, N.J.
